Wearing Black

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ رَفَعَهُ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) يَكْرَهُ السَّوَادَ إِلَّا فِي ثَلَاثٍ الْخُفِّ وَ الْعِمَامَةِ وَ الْكِسَاءِ .
1. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from certain persons of his people in a marfu‘ manner has said the following: “The Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, has said, it is detestable to wear black except three items such as slippers, turbans and gowns.”’

أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ بْنِ مَنْصُورٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) بِالْحِيرَةِ فَأَتَاهُ رَسُولُ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ الْخَلِيفَةِ يَدْعُوهُ فَدَعَا بِمِمْطَرٍ أَحَدُ وَجْهَيْهِ أَسْوَدُ وَ الْآخَرُ أَبْيَضُ فَلَبِسَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) أَمَا إِنِّي أَلْبَسُهُ وَ أَنَا أَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ لِبَاسُ أَهْلِ النَّارِ .
2. Abu Ali al-Ash‘ariy has narrated from certain persons of his people from Muhammad ibn Sinan from Hudhafah ibn Mansur who has said the following: “Once I was with abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, in al-Hirah (a city in Iraq) when the messenger of abu Ja‘far al-Mansur, the caliph came to call him. He (the Imam) asked for a raincoat, one side black and the other side white, and abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said, ‘I wear it but I know that it is the dress of the people of fire.”” (Black was the emblem of al-‘Abbaside rulers. Imam wore it due to Taqiyah (caution because of fear)

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ عَلِيَّ بْنَ الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلام ) وَ عَلَيْهِ دُرَّاعَةٌ سَوْدَاءُ وَ طَيْلَسَانٌ أَزْرَقُ .
3. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Sulayman ibn Rashid from his father who has said the following: “I once saw Ali ibn al-Husayn, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, wearing a black outer garment and a blue Taylisan (pallium).’”
