The Saltwort and Cyperus

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الْأَوَّلِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ أَكْلُ الْأُشْنَانِ يُبْخِرُ الْفَمَ .
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from Ahmad ibn Yazid who has said the following: “Abu al-Hassan al-Awwal, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ’Eating saltwort disinfects the mouth.”’

بَعْضُ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) إِنَّا نَأْكُلُ الْأُشْنَانَ فَقَالَ كَانَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) إِذَا تَوَضَّأَ ضَمَّ شَفَتَيْهِ وَ فِيهِ خِصَالٌ تُكْرَهُ إِنَّهُ يُورِثُ السِّلَّ وَ يَذْهَبُ بِمَاءِ الظَّهْرِ وَ يُوهِي الرُّكْبَتَيْنِفَقُلْتُ فَالطِّينُ فَقَالَ كُلُّ طِينٍ حَرَامٌ مِثْلُ الْمَيْتَةِ وَ الدَّمِ وَ لَحْمِ الْخِنْزِيرِ إِلَّا طِينَ قَبْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ ( عليه السلام ) فَإِنَّ فِيهِ شِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ وَ لَكِنْ لَا يُكْثَرُ مِنْهُ وَ فِيهِ أَمَانٌ مِنْ كُلِّ خَوْفٍ .
2. Certain persons of our people have narrated from Ja‘far ibn Ibrahim al-Hadramiy from Sa‘d ibn Sa‘d who has said the following: “I once said to abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘I eat saltwort.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, when washing his hands and mouth (with saltwort) would keep his lips closed. There is a quality in it, which is disliked. It can cause tuberculoses, it takes away the water of the back and weakens the knees.’ I then asked about clay. He (the Imam) said, ‘Eating clay is unlawful like dead bodies, blood and pork except the clay and soil of the grave of al-Husayn, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, in which there is cure for all illnesses, however, do not be excessive, and there is immunity in it against all kinds of fear.’”

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ عَمِّهِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الْأَوَّلِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ مَنِ اسْتَنْجَى بِالسُّعْدِ بَعْدَ الْغَائِطِ وَ غَسَلَ بِهِ فَمَهُ بَعْدَ الطَّعَامِ لَمْ تُصِبْهُ عِلَّةٌ فِي فَمِهِ وَ لَمْ يَخَفْ شَيْئاً مِنْ أَرْيَاحِ الْبَوَاسِيرِ .
3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ali ibn al-Hassan ibn Ali from Ahmad ibn al-Husayn ibn ‘Umar from his uncle Muhammad ibn ‘Umar from a man who has said the following: “If one washes the outlet of his feces and his mouth after food with cyperus no illness will occur in his mouth and hewill have no fear of gases or hemorrhoid.’”

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِي الْخَزْرَجِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ الزِّبْرِقَانِ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ عَنِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي عَزِيزٍ الْمُرَادِيِّ قَالَ وَ هُوَ خَالُ أُمِّي قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقُولُ اتَّخِذُوا فِي أَسْنَانِكُمُ السُّعْدَ فَإِنَّهُ يُطَيِّبُ الْفَمَ وَ يَزِيدُ فِي الْجِمَاعِ .
4. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from abu al-Khazraj al-Hassan ibn al-Zabarqan al-Ansariy from al-Fadl ibn ‘Uthman from abu ’Aziz al-Muradiy who is maternal uncle of my mother who has said the following: “I once heard abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, saying, ‘Keep cyperus in your teeth; it gives the mouth pleasant smell and increases one’s ability to go to bed with his wife.’”

محمد بن يحيى، عن أحمد بن محمد، عن بعض أصحابه، عن إبراهيم بن أبي البلاد قال: أخذني العباس بن موسى فأمر فوجئ فمي (1) فتزعزعت أسناني فلا أقدر أن أمضغ الطعام فرأيت أبي في المنام ومعه شيخ لا أعرفه فقال أبي رحمه الله: سلم عليه فقلت: يا أبه من هو؟ فقال: هذا أبو شيبة الخراساني (2) قال: فسلمت عليه فقال: مالي أراك هكذا؟ قال:قلت: إن الفاسق العباس بن موسى أمرني فوجئ فمي فتزعزعت أسناني: فقال لي شدها بالسعد، فأصبحت فتمضمضت بالسعد فسكنت أسناني.

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from certain persons of his people from Ibrahim ibn Ibrahim ibn abu al-Balad who have said the following: “Al-‘ Abbas ibn Musa took me and commanded to hit my mouth, so my teeth became shaky and I could not chew food. I then saw my father in my dream. There was an old man with him whom I could not recognize. My father, may Allah grant him mercy, said to me to offer greeting of peace to him.’ I then asked, ‘Father, who is he?’ He replied, ‘He is abu Shaybah al-Khurasaniy (of companions of abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam).’ I offered him greeting of peace and he asked, ‘Why do I see you in this condition?’ I replied, ‘Sinful al-‘Abbas ibn Musa commanded to hit on my mouth and my teeth have become shaky.’ He said, ‘Tie them down with cyperus.’ In the morning I rinsed my teeth with al-Sa‘d and my teeth calmed down.’”

عَنْهُ عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ أَبِي وَلَّادٍ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ الْأَوَّلَ ( عليه السلام ) فِي الْحِجْرِ وَ هُوَ قَاعِدٌ وَ مَعَهُ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ ضُرِبَتْ عَلَيَّ أَسْنَانِي فَأَخَذْتُ السُّعْدَ فَدَلَكْتُ بِهِ أَسْنَانِي فَنَفَعَنِي ذَلِكَ وَ سَكَنَتْ عَنِّي .
6. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from ibn Mahbub from abu Wallad who has said the following: “I once saw abu al-Hassan sitting in al-Hijr (near al-Ka‘bah) along with a group of his family members and I heard him saying, ‘I had a toothache so I took cyperus and rubbed with it my teeth, it benefited me and the pain calmed down.’” End of the Book of Foods followed by the Book of Drinks, by the will of Allah, and all praise belongs to Allah alone, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause."
