The Leek

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ حَسَّانَ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ بَكْرٍ قَالَ اشْتَكَى غُلَامٌ لِأَبِي الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) فَسَأَلَ عَنْهُ فَقِيلَ بِهِ طُحَالٌ فَقَالَ أَطْعِمُوهُ الْكُرَّاثَ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ فَأَطْعَمْنَاهُ فَقَعَدَ الدَّمُ ثُمَّ بَرَأَ .
1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Ali ibn Hassan from Musa ibn Bakr who has said the following: “Once, a slave of abu al-Hassan complained of illness. He (the Imam) asked about him and it was said that he has spleen trouble. He (the Imam) said, Teed him leeks for three days.’ We fed him, blood formed and he became well.’”

عَنْهُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مَنْ رَأَى أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) يَأْكُلُ الْكُرَّاثَ فِي الْمَشَارَةِ وَ يَغْسِلُهُ بِالْمَاءِ وَ يَأْكُلُهُ .
2. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith has said the following: “One who had seen abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, narrated to me that abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, ate leeks from the carriage from the farm and washed it with water.’”

سَهْلُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) يَقْطَعُ الْكُرَّاثَ بِأُصُولِهِ فَيَغْسِلُهُ بِالْمَاءِ وَ يَأْكُلُهُ .
3. Sahl ibn Ziyad has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Walid from Yunus ibn Ya’qub who has said the following: “I saw abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, cut leeks from their roots, wash with water and eat.”

عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ بُنْدَارَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْهَمَذَانِيِّ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ فُرَاتِ بْنِ أَحْنَفَ قَالَ سُئِلَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَنِ الْكُرَّاثِ فَقَالَ كُلْهُ فَإِنَّ فِيهِ أَرْبَعَ خِصَالٍ يُطَيِّبُ النَّكْهَةَ وَ يَطْرُدُ الرِّيَاحَ وَ يَقْطَعُ الْبَوَاسِيرَ وَ هُوَ أَمَانٌ مِنَ الْجُذَامِ لِمَنْ أَدْمَنَ عَلَيْهِ .
4. Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Bandar has narrated from his father from Muhammad ibn Ali al-Hamadaniy from ‘Amr ibn ‘Isa from Furat ibn Ahnaf who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, was asked about leeks and he (the Imam) said, Tat it because it has four qualities. It refreshes one’s breath, dispels gases, cuts down hemorrhoids and it is protection against leprosy for one who eats it very often.’”

عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى أَوْ غَيْرِهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ زَكَرِيَّا عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) قَالَ ذُكِرَتِ الْبُقُولُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) فَقَالَ كُلُوا الْكُرَّاثَ فَإِنَّ مَثَلَهُ فِي الْبُقُولِ كَمَثَلِ الْخُبْزِ فِي سَائِرِ الطَّعَامِ أَوْ قَالَ الْإِدَامِ.
5. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Muhammad ibn ‘Isa or others from ‘Abd al-Rahman from Hammad ibn Zakariya who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that herbs were mentioned before the Messenger of Allah, O Allah, grant compensation to Muhammad and his family worthy of their services to Your cause, he (the Messenger of Allah) said, Tat leeks because its likeness in herbs is like bread in other foods’ or he said ‘sauce.’” Uncertainty is from Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub.

عَنْهُ عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ أَبِي دَاوُدَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ رَأَى أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ( عليه السلام ) بِخُرَاسَانَ يَأْكُلُ الْكُرَّاثَ مِنَ الْبُسْتَانِ كَمَا هُوَ فَقِيلَ لَهُ إِنَّ فِيهِ السَّمَادَ فَقَالَ ( عليه السلام ) لَا تَعَلَّقُ بِهِ مِنْهُ شَيْ‏ءٌ وَ هُوَ جَيِّدٌ لِلْبَوَاسِيرِ .
6. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from Dawud ibn abu Dawud who has said the following: “A man had seen abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, in Khurasan eating leeks from the garden as it was and it was said to him (the Imam), ‘There is fertilizer with it.’ He (the Imam) said, ‘It does not stick to it and it is very good for hemorrhoids.’”

عَنْهُ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ حَنَانِ بْنِ سَدِيرٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ مَعَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ( عليه السلام ) عَلَى الْمَائِدَةِ فَمِلْتُ عَلَى الْهِنْدَبَاءِ فَقَالَ لِي يَا حَنَانُ لِمَ لَا تَأْكُلُ الْكُرَّاثَ قُلْتُ لِمَا جَاءَ عَنْكُمْ مِنَ الرِّوَايَةِ فِي الْهِنْدَبَاءِ فَقَالَ وَ مَا الَّذِي جَاءَ عَنَّا قُلْتُ إِنَّهُ قِيلَ عَنْكُمْ إِنَّكُمْ قُلْتُمْ إِنَّهُ يُقَطَّرُ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ قَطْرَةٌ قَالَ فَقَالَ ( عليه السلام ) فَعَلَى الْكُرَّاثِ إِذَنْ سَبْعُ قَطَرَاتٍ قُلْتُ فَكَيْفَ آكُلُهُ قَالَ اقْطَعْ أُصُولَهُ وَ اقْذِفْ بِرُءُوسِهِ .
7. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from certain persons of his people from Hanan ibn Sadir who has said the following: “I once was with abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, around the table-spread of food. I reached for the endives and he (the Imam) said to me, ‘O Hanan, why do you not eat leeks?’ I replied, ‘It is because of what is narrated from you in the Hadith about endives.’ He (the Imam) then asked, ‘What is narrated about it from us?’ I replied, ‘It is narrated from you as having said, “Every day one drop falls on it.’” He (the Imam) said, ‘On leeks it is seven drops.’ I then asked, ‘How should I eat it?’ He (the Imam) said, ‘Cut their roots and throw away their heads.’”

عَنْهُ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ رَفَعَهُ قَالَ كَانَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ( عليه السلام ) يَأْكُلُ الْكُرَّاثَ بِالْمِلْحِ الْجَرِيشِ .
8. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith from certain persons of his people in a marfu‘ manner who has said the following: “’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, would eat leeks with not so finely powdered salt.’”
