Chapter 22(a) - Rejecting Evil in one’s Heart

1- عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ يَحْيَى الطَّوِيلِ صَاحِبِ الْمِنْقَرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ حَسْبُ الْمُؤْمِنِ عِزّاً إِذَا رَأَى مُنْكَراً أَنْ يَعْلَمَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ مِنْ قَلْبِهِ إِنْكَارَهُ.
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Yahya al-‘ Attar Sahib al-Minqariy who has said the following: “Abu ‘ Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘It is enough in terms of honor for a believing person who upon seeing an evil act committed informs (if he finds) Allah, the most Majestic, the most Glorious, that he rejects and denounces such act.’”

2- وَبِهَذَا الإسْنَادِ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) إِنَّمَا يُؤْمَرُ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَيُنْهَى عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ مُؤْمِنٌ فَيَتَّعِظُ أَوْ جَاهِلٌ فَيَتَعَلَّمُ وَأَمَّا صَاحِبُ سَوْطٍ أَوْ سَيْفٍ فَلا.
2. It is narrated from the narrator of the previous Hadith who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Only believing people who accept good advice should be asked to do good and prohibit committing evil but not those who have the whip and the sword.’”

3- عَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ مُفَضَّلِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) قَالَ قَالَ لِي يَا مُفَضَّلُ مَنْ تَعَرَّضَ لِسُلْطَانٍ جَائِرٍ فَأَصَابَتْهُ بَلِيَّةٌ لَمْ يُؤْجَرْ عَلَيْهَا وَلَمْ يُرْزَقِ الصَّبْرَ عَلَيْهَا.
3. It is narrated from (Ali ibn Ibrahim) his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Mufaddal ibn Yazid who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, once said to me, ‘O Mufaddal, if one protests against an unjust ruler and he faces an affliction he will not receive any reward for such suffering nor is he granted any patience to bear in such suffering.’”

4- عَلِيٌّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ غِيَاثِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ كَانَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) إِذَا مَرَّ بِجَمَاعَةٍ يَخْتَصِمُونَ لَمْ يَجُزْهُمْ حَتَّى يَقُولَ ثَلاثاً اتَّقُوا اللهَ اتَّقُوا اللهَ يَرْفَعُ بِهَا صَوْتَهُ.
4. Ali has narrated from his father from certain persons of his people from Ghiyath ibn Ibrahim who has said the following: “When seeing a quarrelling group of people abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, would not pass by without always saying three times loudly, ‘You must maintain piety in the presence of Allah.’”

5- مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ مَحْفُوظٍ الإسْكَافِ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) رَمَى جَمْرَةَ الْعَقَبَةِ وَانْصَرَفَ فَمَشَيْتُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ كَالْمُطَرِّقِ لَهُ فَإِذَا رَجُلٌ أَصْفَرُ عَمْرَكِيٌّ قَدْ أَدْخَلَ عُودَةً فِي الأرْضِ شِبْهَ السَّابِحِ وَرَبَطَهُ إِلَى فُسْطَاطِهِ وَالنَّاسُ وُقُوفٌ لا يَقْدِرُونَ عَلَى أَنْ يَمُرُّوا فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) يَا هَذَا اتَّقِ اللهَ فَإِنَّ هَذَا الَّذِي تَصْنَعُهُ لَيْسَ لَكَ قَالَ فَقَالَ لَهُ الْعَمْرَكِيُّ أَمَا تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَذْهَبَ إِلَى عَمَلِكَ لا يَزَالُ الْمُكَلِّفُ الَّذِي لا يُدْرَى مَنْ هُوَ يَجِيئُنِي فَيَقُولُ يَا هَذَا اتَّقِ اللهَ قَالَ فَرَفَعَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلام) بِخِطَامِ بَعِيرٍ لَهُ مَقْطُوراً فَطَأْطَأَ رَأْسَهُ فَمَضَى وَتَرَكَهُ الْعَمْرَكِيُّ الأسْوَدُ.

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Sinan from Mahfuz al-Iskaf who has said the following: “I saw abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, who had completed throwing pebbles on Jamarah al-‘Aqabah and was moving away. I walked before to clear the path for him. There was a man of yellow complexion from ‘Amrak (or a quarrelsome one) who had fixed a peg in the ground and had tied a rope from it to his tent which had blocked people’s movement. Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al- Salam, said to him, ‘O you, be pious before Allah. This (path) does not belong to you.’ He (the narrator) has said that al-‘Amraki said to him, ‘Why can you not mind your own business instead of imposing on me a burden without knowing who passes by (my tent) and say, “O you, be pious before Allah.’” The narrator has said that abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, then lifted the rope of his camel, bowed his head down and passed by. Al-‘Amrakiy, the black person, also left him alone.’”
