About the Souls (spirits) of the Unbelievers

1ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ أَرْوَاحِ الْمُشْرِكِينَ فَقَالَ فِي النَّارِ يُعَذَّبُونَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا لاَ تُقِمْ لَنَا السَّاعَةَ وَلاَ تُنْجِزْ لَنَا مَا وَعَدْتَنَا وَلاَ تُلْحِقْ آخِرَنَا بِأَوَّلِنَا.
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Muhammad ibn ‘Uthman from abu Basir who has said the following: “I once asked abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the souls (spirits) of the pagans. He replied, ‘They are in the fire where they are punished. They say, “O Lord, do not make it the Day of Judgment for us. Do not allow what You have promised us to come true and do not join the last of us with our first.””’

2ـ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي نَجْرَانَ عَنْ مُثَنًّى عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ إِنَّ أَرْوَاحَ الْكُفَّارِ فِي نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ يُعْرَضُونَ عَلَيْهَا يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا لاَ تُقِمْ لَنَا السَّاعَةَ وَلاَ تُنْجِزْ لَنَا مَا وَعَدْتَنَا وَلاَ تُلْحِقْ آخِرَنَا بِأَوَّلِنَا.
2. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn abu Najran from Muthanna from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the souls (spirits) of the unbelievers are exposed to hellfire. They say, ‘O Lord, do not make any Day of Judgment for us. Do not allow what You have promised us to come true and do not join the last of us with our first ones.’”

3ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ بِإِسْنَادٍ لَهُ قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) شَرُّ بِئْرٍ فِي النَّارِ بَرَهُوتُ الَّذِي فِيهِ أَرْوَاحُ الْكُفَّارِ.
3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ahmad through the chain of his narrators has said the following: “’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The worst well in the fire is the well of Barahut in which the souls (spirits) of unbelievers live.’”

4ـ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ جَمِيعاً عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الأشْعَرِيِّ عَنِ الْقَدَّاحِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله عَنْ آبَائِهِ (عَلَيْهِم الْسَّلام) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) شَرُّ مَاءٍ عَلَى وَجْهِ الأرْضِ مَاءُ بَرَهُوتَ وَهُوَ الَّذِي بِحَضْرَمَوْتَ تَرِدُهُ هَامُ الْكُفَّارِ.
4. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad and Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father all from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Ash’ariy from al-Qaddah who has narrated the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah from his ancestors, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has narrated that ’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The worst water on earth is the water of Barahut which is in Hadramawt where the souls (spirits) of unbelievers camp.’”

5ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ الله (صلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) شَرُّ الْيَهُودِ يَهُودُ بَيْسَانَ وَشَرُّ النَّصَارَى نَصَارَى نَجْرَانَ وَخَيْرُ مَاءٍ عَلَى وَجْهِ الأرْضِ مَاءُ زَمْزَمَ وَشَرُّ مَاءٍ عَلَى وَجْهِ الأرْضِ مَاءُ بَرَهُوتَ وَهُوَ وَادٍ بِحَضْرَمَوْتَ يَرِدُ عَلَيْهِ هَامُ الْكُفَّارِ وَصَدَاهُمْ.
5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that the Messenger of Allah has said, ‘The worst ones among Jews are the Jews of Baysan, the worst ones among Christians are the Christians of Najran. The best water on earth is the water of Zamzam and the worst water on earth is the water of Barahut and it is in the valley of Hadramawt where the souls and spirits of unbelievers camp.’”
