Visiting of the Graves

1ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ حَفْصِ بْنِ الْبَخْتَرِيِّ وَجَمِيلِ بْنِ دَرَّاجٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) فِي زِيَارَةِ الْقُبُورِ قَالَ إِنَّهُمْ يَأْنَسُونَ بِكُمْ فَإِذَا غِبْتُمْ عَنْهُمُ اسْتَوْحَشُوا.
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hafs ibn af-Bakhtariy and Jamil ibn Darraj who has said the following: “Abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that they (people of the cemetery) take comfort in you. When you disappear from them they become afraid.”

2ـ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ سَمَاعَةَ قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ زِيَارَةِ الْقُبُورِ وَبِنَاءِ الْمَسَاجِدِ فِيهَا فَقَالَ أَمَّا زِيَارَةُ الْقُبُورِ فَلاَ بَأْسَ بِهَا وَلاَ تُبْنَى عِنْدَهَا الْمَسَاجِدُ.
2. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Sama‘ah who has said the following: “I asked (the Imam), ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about visiting graves and building Masjids there. He said, ‘There is no offense in visiting graves, but Masjid must not be built there.’”

3ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ عَاشَتْ فَاطِمَةُ (عَلَيْهِا الْسَّلام) بَعْدَ أَبِيهَا خَمْسَةً وَسَبْعِينَ يَوْماً لَمْ تُرَ كَاشِرَةً وَلاَ ضَاحِكَةً تَأْتِي قُبُورَ الشُّهَدَاءِ فِي كُلِّ جُمْعَةٍ مَرَّتَيْنِ الإِثْنَيْنَ وَالْخَمِيسَ فَتَقُولُ هَاهُنَا كَانَ رَسُولُ الله (صلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) هَاهُنَا كَانَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ.
3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hisham ibn Salim who has said the following: “I heard the Imam, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, say, ‘Fatimah, ‘Alayha al-Salam, lived for seventy-five days after her father but she was never seen smiling or laughing. Every week she would visit the graves of the martyrs twice on Mondays and Thursdays and would say, “There was the Prophet and there were the pagans.”’”

4ـ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ الْمُؤْمِنُ يَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ يَزُورُ قَبْرَهُ قَالَ نَعَمْ وَلاَ يَزَالُ مُسْتَأْنِساً بِهِ مَا دَامَ عِنْدَ قَبْرِهِ فَإِذَا قَامَ وَانْصَرَفَ مِنْ قَبْرِهِ دَخَلَهُ مِنِ انْصِرَافِهِ عَنْ قَبْرِهِ وَحْشَةٌ.
4. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn Sinan from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar from abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, who has said the following: “I asked the Imam, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘Does a believing deceased notice who has visited his grave?’ He replied, ‘Yes, and he continues to take comfort in his visitor as long as he is near his grave. When the visitor stands up and leaves the gravesite he (the deceased) becomes afraid and lonely.’”

5ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ سِنَانٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لأَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) كَيْفَ التَّسْلِيمُ عَلَى أَهْلِ الْقُبُورِ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ تَقُولُ السَّلاَمُ عَلَى أَهْلِ الدِّيَارِ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَنْتُمْ لَنَا فَرَطٌ وَنَحْنُ إِنْ شَاءَ الله بِكُمْ لاَحِقُونَ.
5. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Mughirah from ‘Abd Allah ibn Sinan who has said the following: “I asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘How should one offer greeting of peace to the people of the graves?’ He said, ‘Yes, (it has an answer). Say, “(May Allah grant) peace to the dwellings of the Muslims and believing people. You have departed us and we, by the will of Allah, will join you.’””

6ـ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ جَمِيعاً عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ أَبِي الْمِقْدَامِ قَالَ مَرَرْتُ مَعَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) بِالْبَقِيعِ فَمَرَرْنَا بِقَبْرِ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ مِنَ الشِّيعَةِ قَالَ فَوَقَفَ عَلَيْهِ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) فَقَالَ اللهمَّ ارْحَمْ غُرْبَتَهُ وَصِلْ وَحْدَتَهُ وَآنِسْ وَحْشَتَهُ وَأَسْكِنْ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ رَحْمَتِكَ مَا يَسْتَغْنِي بِهَا عَنْ رَحْمَةِ مَنْ سِوَاكَ وَأَلْحِقْهُ بِمَنْ كَانَ يَتَوَلاَّهُ.
6. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad and Muhammad ibn Yahya from Ahmad ibn Muhammad all from ibn Mahbub from “Amr ibn abu al-Miqdam who has said the following: “Once abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, and I passed by al-Baqi’ cemetery. We then passed by the grave of a person from al-Kufah who was a Shi ‘ah Muslim. The narrator has said that the Imam stood on his grave and said, ‘O Lord, grant him mercy and kindness in his loneliness, provide him company in his solitude, comfort him in his distress and give him such serenity, through Your mercy, that can suffice him in place of the kindness and mercy of everyone beside You. Join him with those whom he loved (accepted as his guardians).”’

7ـ أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الأشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ شَاذَانَ جَمِيعاً عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ حَازِمٍ قَالَ تَقُولُ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنْ دِيَارِ قَوْمٍ مُؤْمِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِنْ شَاءَ الله بِكُمْ لاَحِقُونَ.
7. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar and Muhammad ibn Isma’il from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan all from Safwan ibn Yahya from Mansur ibn Hazim in a Muzmar manner who has said the following: “He (the Imam) has said, ‘As a greeting of peace to the people of the graves say, “May Allah grant you peace which was wished for you by the town of a believing people, and we by the will of Allah are about to join you.’”

8ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنِ النَّضْرِ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ جَرَّاحٍ الْمَدَائِنِيِّ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) كَيْفَ التَّسْلِيمُ عَلَى أَهْلِ الْقُبُورِ قَالَ تَقُولُ السَّلاَمُ عَلَى أَهْلِ الدِّيَارِ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَحِمَ الله الْمُسْتَقْدِمِينَ مِنَّا وَالْمُسْتَأْخِرِينَ وَإِنَّا إِنْ شَاءَ الله بِكُمْ لاَحِقُونَ.
8. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd from al-Qasim ibn Sulayman from Jarrah al-Mada’iniy who has said the following: “I asked abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ’How should one offer greeting of peace to the people of the graves?’ He replied, say, ‘May Allah grant peace to the Muslims and believing ones of this dwelling place. May Allah grant mercy upon those of us who have preceded us (to the next life) and those who will follow and we, by the will of Allah, are about to join you.’”

9ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ قَالَ كُنْتُ بِفَيْدَ فَمَشَيْتَ مَعَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ بِلاَلٍ إِلَى قَبْرِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ بَزِيعٍ فَقَالَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ بِلاَلٍ قَالَ لِي صَاحِبُ هَذَا الْقَبْرِ عَنِ الرِّضَا (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ مَنْ أَتَى قَبْرَ أَخِيهِ ثُمَّ وَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى الْقَبْرِ وَقَرَأَ إِنَّا أَنْزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ سَبْعَ مَرَّاتٍ أَمِنَ يَوْمَ الْفَزَعِ الأكْبَرِ أَوْ يَوْمَ الْفَزَعِ.
9. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn Ahmad who has said the following: “I was in Fayd (a place near Makkah). Ali ibn Bilal and I went to visit the grave of Muhammad ibn Isma’il ibn Bazi‘ and Ali ibn Bilal said, ‘The dweller of this grave narrated to me from al-Rida’, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, the following: “If one visits the grave of his brother (in belief), places his hand over the grave and reads Surah 97 of the Holy Quran seven times he, on the distressful Day (of Judgment) will be granted full protection and peace.’””

10ـ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْكُوفِيُّ عَنِ ابْنِ جُمْهُورٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ مُفَضَّلِ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) وَعَنْ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الأصَمِّ عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) زُورُوا مَوْتَاكُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ يَفْرَحُونَ بِزِيَارَتِكُمْ وَلْيَطْلُبْ أَحَدُكُمْ حَاجَتَهُ عِنْدَ قَبْرِ أَبِيهِ وَعِنْدَ قَبْرِ أُمِّهِ بِمَا يَدْعُو لَهُمَا.
10. Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Kufiy has narrated from ibn Jumhur from his father from Muhammad ibn Sinan from Mufaddal ibn ‘Umar and from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abd al- Rahman al-Asamm from Hariz from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that ’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Visit your dead people; they become happy due to your visit. One of you should ask for his wishes near the grave of his father and near the grave of his mother through the prayers that one may say for them.’”
