The Obligations of the Neighbors toward the People of the Deceased and Mourning Ceremonies

1ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ حَفْصِ بْنِ الْبَخْتَرِيِّ وَعَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ لَمَّا قُتِلَ جَعْفَرُ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) أَمَرَ رَسُولُ الله (صلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) فَاطِمَةَ (عَلَيْهِا الْسَّلام) أَنْ تَتَّخِذَ طَعَاماً لأَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ عُمَيْسٍ ثَلاَثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَتَأْتِيَهَا وَنِسَاءَهَا فَتُقِيمَ عِنْدَهَا ثَلاَثَةَ أَيَّامٍ فَجَرَتْ بِذَلِكَ السُّنَّةُ أَنْ يُصْنَعَ لأَهْلِ الْمُصِيبَةِ طَعَامٌ ثَلاَثاً.
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hafs ibn al-Bakhtariy (and from) Hisham ibn Salim who has said the following: “Abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that when Ja‘far ibn abu Talib was martyred, the Messenger of Allah instructed Fatimah, ‘Alayha al-Salam, to prepare food for Asma’ bint ‘Umays for three days and visit her with a group of her women everyday for three days. This formed the tradition to prepare food for the people of the deceased for three days.”

2ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ حَمَّادٍ عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ يُصْنَعُ لأَهْلِ الْمَيِّتِ مَأْتَمٌ ثَلاَثَةَ أَيَّامٍ مِنْ يَوْمَ مَاتَ.
2. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad from Hariz from Zurarah who has said the following: “Abu Ja’far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Mourning ceremony is organized for a deceased for three days, beginning from the day of his death.’”

3ـ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ سَعْدَانَ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ يَنْبَغِي لِجِيرَانِ صَاحِبِ الْمُصِيبَةِ أَنْ يُطْعِمُوا الطَّعَامَ عَنْهُ ثَلاَثَةَ أَيَّامٍ.
3. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Ahmad ibn Ishaq from Sa‘dan from abu Basir who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said that neighbors of the people of a deceased should prepare food for them (people of the deceased) for three days.”

4ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ حَرِيزٍ أَوْ غَيْرِهِ قَالَ أَوْصَى أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) بِثَمَانِمِائَةِ دِرْهَمٍ لِمَأْتَمِهِ وَكَانَ يَرَى ذَلِكَ مِنَ السُّنَّةِ لأَنَّ رَسُولَ الله (صلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) قَالَ اتَّخِذُوا لآِلِ جَعْفَرٍ طَعَاماً فَقَدْ شُغِلُوا.
4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Hariz or others who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, said in his will that eight hundred dirhams should be spent to organize a memorial service for his death. He considered it as part of the tradition; the Messenger of Allah had said, ‘Prepare food for the family of Ja‘far; they are preoccupied (with the death of Ja‘far).’”

5ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الله الْكَاهِلِيِّ قَالَ قُلْتُ لأَبِي الْحَسَنِ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) إِنَّ امْرَأَتِي وَامْرَأَةَ ابْنِ مَارِدٍ تَخْرُجَانِ فِي الْمَأْتَمِ فَأَنْهَاهُمَا فَتَقُولُ لِيَ امْرَأَتِي إِنْ كَانَ حَرَاماً فَانْهَنَا عَنْهُ حَتَّى نَتْرُكَهُ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ حَرَاماً فَلأَيِّ شَيْ‏ءٍ تَمْنَعُنَاهُ فَإِذَا مَاتَ لَنَا مَيِّتٌ لَمْ يَجِئْنَا أَحَدٌ قَالَ فَقَالَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) عَنِ الْحُقُوقِ تَسْأَلُنِي كَانَ أَبِي (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) يَبْعَثُ أُمِّي وَأُمَّ فَرْوَةَ تَقْضِيَانِ حُقُوقَ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ.
5. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from ‘Abd Allah al-Kahiliy who has said the following: “Once I said to abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘My wife and the wife of ibn Marid went to join a memorial service, and I tried to stop them but my wife said, “If it is unlawful then stop us so we desist, but if it is not unlawful then why should you stop us? If one of us will die no one will come to us.”’ Abu al-Hassan, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, then said, ‘You are asking about rights. My father would send my mother and mother of Farwah to meet the terms of the rights of the people of al-Madinah.’”

6ـ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْكُوفِيُّ عَنِ ابْنِ جُمْهُورٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ الْمُفَضَّلِ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ وَحَدَّثَنَا الأصَمُّ عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (صلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) مُرُوا أَهَالِيَكُمْ بِالْقَوْلِ الْحَسَنِ عِنْدَ مَوْتَاكُمْ فَإِنَّ فَاطِمَةَ س لَمَّا قُبِضَ أَبُوهَا (صلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) أَسْعَدَتْهَا بَنَاتُ هَاشِمٍ فَقَالَتِ اتْرُكْنَ التَّعْدَادَ وَعَلَيْكُنَّ بِالدُّعَاءِ.
6. Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Kufiy has narrated from ibn Jumhur from his father from Muhammad ibn Sinan from al-Mufaddal ibn ‘Umar who has said the following: “He has also said that al-Asamm has narrated to us from Hariz from Muhammad ibn Muslim from abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, who has said the following: ‘’Amir al-Mu’minin, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, “Instruct your families to speak good words when someone among you dies. When father of Fatimah, ‘Alayha al-Salam, died, daughters of children of Hashim supported her and she said to them, ‘Ignore eulogies but you must pray (to Allah).”””
