Women’s Performing Salah (Prayer) for a Dead Person

1ـ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ عَنِ امْرَأَةِ الْحَسَنِ الصَّيْقَلِ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ الصَّيْقَلِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ سُئِلَ كَيْفَ تُصَلِّي النِّسَاءُ عَلَى الْجِنَازَةِ إِذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ مَعَهُنَّ رَجُلٌ قَالَ يَصْفُفْنَ جَمِيعاً وَلاَ تَتَقَدَّمُهُنَّ امْرَأَةٌ.
1. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from al-Hassan ibn Ali ibn Faddal from Ali ibn ‘Uqbah from woman of al-Hassan al-Sayqal from al-Hassan al-Sayqal who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about women’s performing Salah (prayer) for deceased people if there is no man present among them. He (the Imam) said, ‘They all line up and no one of them stands up in front of others.’”

2ـ أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الأشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ النَّضْرِ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شِمْرٍ عَنْ جَابِرٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ إِذَا لَمْ يَحْضُرِ الرَّجُلُ تَقَدَّمَتِ امْرَأَةٌ وَسَطَهُنَّ وَقَامَ النِّسَاءُ عَنْ يَمِينِهَا وَشِمَالِهَا وَهِيَ وَسَطَهُنَّ تُكَبِّرُ حَتَّى تَفْرُغَ مِنَ الصَّلاَةِ.
2. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn Salim from Ahmad ibn abu Nadr from ‘Amr ibn Shimr from Jabir who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If no man is present, a woman leads (standing) in the middle with other women on her right and left, she in the middle says Takbir (Allah is great beyond description) until Salah (prayer) is complete.’”

3ـ حُمَيْدُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْكِنْدِيِّ عَنِ الْمِيثَمِيِّ عَنْ أَبَانِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ قُلْتُ تُصَلِّي الْحَائِضُ عَلَى الْجِنَازَةِ قَالَ نَعَمْ وَلاَ تَصُفُّ مَعَهُمْ تَقُومُ مُفْرَدَةً.

Humayd ibn Ziyad has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Muhammad al-Kindiy from al-Mithamiy from Aban ibn ‘Uthman from ‘Abd al- Rahman ibn abu ‘Abd Allah who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a woman experiencing Hayd (menses), if she can perform Salah (prayer) for a deceased. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, but she must not stand in the line; instead stand alone.’”

4ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) عَنِ الْحَائِضِ تُصَلِّي عَلَى الْجِنَازَةِ قَالَ نَعَمْ وَلاَ تَصُفُّ مَعَهُمْ.
4. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Hammad ibn ‘Isa from Hariz from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I once asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, about the case of a woman who experiences Hayd (menses) if she can perform Salah (prayer) for a deceased. He (the Imam) said, ‘Yes, but she must not stand in the line of the others.’”

5ـ حَمَّادٌ عَنْ حَرِيزٍ عَمَّنْ أَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ الطَّامِثُ تُصَلِّي عَلَى الْجِنَازَةِ لأَنَّهُ لَيْسَ فِيهَا رُكُوعٌ وَلاَ سُجُودٌ وَالْجُنُبُ تَتَيَمَّمُ وَتُصَلِّي عَلَى الْجِنَازَةِ.
5. Hammad has narrated from Hariz from those whom he has mentioned who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Woman experiencing Hayd (menses) can also perform Salah (prayer) for a deceased; there is no Ruku‘, and Sajdah. One experiencing sexual relation can take Tayammum and performs Salah (prayer) for a deceased.’”
