Walking Along with Procession for the Dead Body

1ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُذَافِرٍ عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ الْمَشْيُ خَلْفَ الْجَنَازَةِ أَفْضَلُ مِنَ الْمَشْيِ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهَا.
1. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Isma’il from Muhammad ibn ‘Adhafir from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar, who has said the following: “Abu ’Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Walking behind the coffin of the deceased is more virtuous than walking in front of it.’”

2ـ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أُورَمَةَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو عَنْ حُسَيْنِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ الْمِنْقَرِيِّ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ ظَبْيَانَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ امْشِ أَمَامَ جَنَازَةِ الْمُسْلِمِ الْعَارِفِ وَلاَ تَمْشِ أَمَامَ جَنَازَةِ الْجَاحِدِ فَإِنَّ أَمَامَ جَنَازَةِ الْمُسْلِمِ مَلاَئِكَةً يُسْرِعُونَ بِهِ إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ وَإِنَّ أَمَامَ جَنَازَةِ الْكَافِرِ مَلاَئِكَةً يُسْرِعُونَ بِهِ إِلَى النَّارِ.
2. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Muhammad ibn ‘Uramah from Muhammad ibn ‘Amr from Husayn ibn Ahmad al-Minqariy from Yunus ibn Zabyan who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘Walk in front of the coffin of a knowledgeable Muslim but do not walk in front of the coffin of a rejecter (of belief). In front of the coffin of a Muslim, angels who hasten to paradise walk, but in front of the coffin of an unbeliever, angels walk who hasten with him (the unbeliever) to hell.”’

3ـ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ مُفَضَّلِ بْنِ صَالِحٍ عَنْ جَابِرٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ مَشَى النَّبِيُّ (صلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه) خَلْفَ جَنَازَةٍ فَقِيلَ لَهُ يَا رَسُولَ الله مَا لَكَ تَمْشِي خَلْفَهَا فَقَالَ إِنَّ الْمَلاَئِكَةَ أَرَاهُمْ يَمْشُونَ أَمَامَهَا وَنَحْنُ تَبَعٌ لَهُمْ.
3. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from ‘Amr ibn ‘Uthman from Mufaddal ibn Salih from Jabir who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘The Holy Prophet once was walking behind the coffin of a deceased person and he was asked, “O Messenger of Allah, why do you walk behind the coffin?” He replied, “I see angels walk in front of the coffin and we just follow them.’””

4ـ أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الأشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنِ الْعَلاَءِ بْنِ رَزِينٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَحَدِهِمَا (عَلَيْهِما الْسَّلام) قَالَ سَأَلْتُهُ عَنِ الْمَشْيِ مَعَ الْجَنَازَةِ فَقَالَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهَا وَعَنْ يَمِينِهَا وَعَنْ شِمَالِهَا وَخَلْفِهَا.
4. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan ibn Yahya from al-‘Ala’ ibn Razin from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “I asked him [one of the two Imam] (abu Ja‘far or abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhim al-Salam, about walking in the funeral procession. He said, ‘Walk in front or on the right or left side or behind it.’”

5ـ حُمَيْدُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْكِنْدِيِّ عَنْ غَيْرِ وَاحِدٍ عَنْ أَبَانِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ امْشِ بَيْنَ يَدَيِ الْجَنَازَةِ وَخَلْفَهَا.
5. Humayd ibn Ziyad has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Muhammad al-Kindiy from more than one person from Aban ibn ‘Uthman from Muhammad ibn Muslim who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘(In a funeral procession) walk in front or behind (the coffin).”’

6ـ أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الأشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ عَنِ الْحَجَّالِ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ شَجَرَةَ عَنْ أَبِي الْوَفَاءِ الْمُرَادِيِّ عَنْ سَدِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَمْشِيَ مَمْشَى الْكِرَامِ الْكَاتِبِينَ فَلْيَمْشِ بِجَنْبَيِ السَّرِيرِ.
6. Abu Ali al-Ash’ariy has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from al-Hajjal from Ali ibn Shajarah from abu al-Wafa’ al- Muradiy from Sadir who has said the following: “Abu Ja‘far, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, has said, ‘If one wants to walk (in a funeral procession) like the honorable angels, then walk on either side of the coffin.’”

7ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيْهِ الْسَّلام) قَالَ سُئِلَ كَيْفَ أَصْنَعُ إِذَا خَرَجْتُ مَعَ الْجَنَازَةِ أَمْشِي أَمَامَهَا أَوْ خَلْفَهَا أَوْ عَنْ يَمِينِهَا أَوْ عَنْ شِمَالِهَا فَقَالَ إِنْ كَانَ مُخَالِفاً فَلاَ تَمْشِ أَمَامَهُ فَإِنَّ مَلاَئِكَةَ الْعَذَابِ يَسْتَقْبِلُونَهُ بِأَلْوَانِ الْعَذَابِ.
7. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfaliy from al-Sakuniy who has said the following: “Someone asked abu ‘Abd Allah, ‘Alayhi al-Salam, ‘How should I walk in a funeral procession?’ The Imam replied, ‘Walk in front, or behind or on the right or left side of the coffin.’ He (the Imam) then said, ‘Do not walk in front if he is someone opposed to our belief; the angels of torment will come his way with all kinds of torment.’”
