Gratitude and Thankfulness

1ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ النَّوْفَلِيِّ عَنِ السَّكُونِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ الله (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وآلِه) الطَّاعِمُ الشَّاكِرُ لَهُ مِنَ الأجْرِ كَأَجْرِ الصَّائِمِ الْمُحْتَسِبِ وَالْمُعَافَى الشَّاكِرُ لَهُ مِنَ الأجْرِ كَأَجْرِ الْمُبْتَلَى الصَّابِرِ وَالْمُعْطَى الشَّاكِرُ لَهُ مِنَ الأجْرِ كَأَجْرِ الْمَحْرُومِ الْقَانِعِ.
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Nawfali from al-Sakuni from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘A person feeding (himself) with gratitude (before Allah) has a reward equal to the reward of a fasting person who brings himself to strict account. A person in good health who is grateful receives a reward equal to the reward of a person who suffers from an illness but exercises patience. A person who gives charity with gratitude receives a reward equal to the reward of a deprived person who is content.’”

2ـ وَبِهَذَا الإسْنَادِ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ الله (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وآلِه) مَا فَتَحَ الله عَلَى عَبْدٍ بَابَ شُكْرٍ فَخَزَنَ عَنْهُ بَابَ الزِّيَادَةِ.
2. It is narrated through the same chain of narrators: “The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘Whenever Allah opens the door of gratitude to someone He does not keep the door of increasing (bounties) hidden from him.’”

3ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْبَغْدَادِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ الْجَعْفَرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ مَكْتُوبٌ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ اشْكُرْ مَنْ أَنْعَمَ عَلَيْكَ وَأَنْعِمْ عَلَى مَنْ شَكَرَكَ فَإِنَّهُ لا زَوَالَ لِلنَّعْمَاءِ إِذَا شُكِرَتْ وَلا بَقَاءَ لَهَا إِذَا كُفِرَتْ الشُّكْرُ زِيَادَةٌ فِي النِّعَمِ وَأَمَانٌ مِنَ الْغِيَرِ.
3. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Ja’far ibn Muhammad al-Baghdadi from ‘Abd Allah ibn Ishaq al-Ja’fari from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘This is written in the Torah: “Thank (and be grateful to) those who have done favors to you, and do favors to those who thank you; bounties will not go away if you appreciate them and they will not stay all the time if you reject them. Thankfulness increases the bounties and provides security against changes (from good to worse).””’

4ـ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَسْبَاطٍ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ أَوْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ الْمُعَافَى الشَّاكِرُ لَهُ مِنَ الأجْرِ مَا لِلْمُبْتَلَى الصَّابِرِ وَالْمُعْطَى الشَّاكِرُ لَهُ مِنَ الأجْرِ كَالْمَحْرُومِ الْقَانِعِ.
4. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn abu ‘Abd Allah from Muhammad ibn Ali from Ali ibn Asbat from Ya’qub ibn Salim from a man from abu Ja’far or Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘A person in good health who is thankful for it receives the same amount of reward as a person who in an ailing health exercises patience. One who gives (charity) and is thankful (for his ability) receives the same amount of reward as the deprived person who is content.’”

5ـ عَنْهُ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي نَصْرٍ عَنْ دَاوُدَ بْنِ الْحُصَيْنِ عَنْ فَضْلٍ الْبَقْبَاقِ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) عَنْ قَوْلِ الله عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَأَمَّا بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ فَحَدِّثْ قَالَ الَّذِي أَنْعَمَ عَلَيْكَ بِمَا فَضَّلَكَ وَأَعْطَاكَ وَأَحْسَنَ إِلَيْكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ فَحَدَّثَ بِدِينِهِ وَمَا أَعْطَاهُ الله وَمَا أَنْعَمَ بِهِ عَلَيْهِ.
5. It is narrated from him (narrator of the Hadith above) from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn abu Nasr from Dawud al-Hasin from Fadl al-Baqbaq who has said the following: “I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) about the words of Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, ‘. . . and proclaim the bounties of your Lord.’ (93:11) The Imam said that in the above passage the Holy Prophet is commanded, to proclaim the special treatment that He has granted you, the distinctions that He has given you, the favors that He has presented to you and His being benevolent to you. The Imam then said, ‘He (the Holy Prophet) then spoke of His religion, and of what Allah had given him and the bounties that He made available to him.’”

6ـ حُمَيْدُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَمَاعَةَ عَنْ وُهَيْبِ بْنِ حَفْصٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ الله (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وآلِه) عِنْدَ عَائِشَةَ لَيْلَتَهَا فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ الله لِمَ تُتْعِبُ نَفْسَكَ وَقَدْ غَفَرَ الله لَكَ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِكَ وَمَا تَأَخَّرَ فَقَالَ يَا عَائِشَةُ أَ لا أَكُونُ عَبْداً شَكُوراً قَالَ وَكَانَ رَسُولُ الله (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وآلِه) يَقُومُ عَلَى أَطْرَافِ أَصَابِعِ رِجْلَيْهِ فَأَنْزَلَ الله سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى طه ما أَنْزَلْنا عَلَيْكَ الْقُرْآنَ لِتَشْقى‏.
6. Hamid ibn Ziyad has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Muhammad ibn Sama’a from Wuhayb ibn Hafs from Abu Basir from Abu Ja’far (a.s.) who has said the following: ‘One night when the Messenger of Allah stayed in ‘A’isha’s chamber she asked, “O Messenger of Allah, why do you tire yourself when Allah has already forgiven all of your past and future sins (that the pagans thought you had committed against them)?” He replied, ‘O ‘A’isha, should not I be a grateful servant?’ “The Imam said, ‘The Messenger of Allah would stand up on his toes worshipping, then Allah revealed this to him, ‘Ta. Ha (Quran 20:1). We have not sent the Quran to make you, (Muhammad), miserable (Quran 20:2) (It is) only a reminder for those who are afraid (of disobeying Allah). (Quran 20:3).'"

7ـ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ حَسَنِ بْنِ جَهْمٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْيَقْظَانِ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ الله بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) يَقُولُ ثَلاثٌ لا يَضُرُّ مَعَهُنَّ شَيْ‏ءٌ الدُّعَاءُ عِنْدَ الْكَرْبِ وَالإسْتِغْفَارُ عِنْدَ الذَّنْبِ وَالشُّكْرُ عِنْدَ النِّعْمَةِ.
7. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from Hassan ibn Jahm from abu al-Yaqdan from ‘Ubayd Allah ibn al- Walid who has said the following: “I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) saying, ‘With the existence of three factors nothing can harm one. These factors include: prayer in difficulties, asking forgiveness in sins and thankfulness for bounties.’”

8ـ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ جَبَلَةَ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ وَهْبٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ مَنْ أُعْطِيَ الشُّكْرَ أُعْطِيَ الزِّيَادَةَ يَقُولُ الله عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَئِنْ شَكَرْتُمْ لأزِيدَنَّكُمْ.
8. A number of our people have narrated from Sahl ibn Ziyad from Yahya ibn al- Mubarak from ‘Abd Allah ibn Jabalah from Mu’awiyah ibn Wahab from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘Whoever is granted the ability to be thankful is also granted increase in bounties. Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, has said, “. . . if you give thanks, I shall give you greater (favors). .. .’””(14:7)

9ـ أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الأشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْجَبَّارِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ عَنْ رَجُلَيْنِ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا سَمِعَاهُ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ مَا أَنْعَمَ الله عَلَى عَبْدٍ مِنْ نِعْمَةٍ فَعَرَفَهَا بِقَلْبِهِ وَحَمِدَ الله ظَاهِراً بِلِسَانِهِ فَتَمَّ كَلامُهُ حَتَّى يُؤْمَرَ لَهُ بِالْمَزِيدِ.
9. Abu Ali al-Ash’ari has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar from two men of our people who have said the following: “We heard Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) saying, ‘If upon Allah’s granting a favor to a servant he acknowledges it in his heart, and expresses thanks to Him in public, as soon as his words are completed, an order is issued to give the servant more.’”

10ـ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ عَنْ مُيَسِّرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ شُكْرُ النِّعْمَةِ اجْتِنَابُ الْمَحَارِمِ وَتَمَامُ الشُّكْرِ قَوْلُ الرَّجُلِ الْحَمْدُ لله رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ.
10. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from certain individuals of our people from Muhammad ibn Hisham from Muyassir from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘Not to commit unlawful acts is a form of expressing thanks for a bounty. A complete expression of thankfulness is that one says, “All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds.””’

11ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) يَقُولُ شُكْرُ كُلِّ نِعْمَةٍ وَإِنْ عَظُمَتْ أَنْ تَحْمَدَ الله عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَلَيْهَا.
11. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Ali ibn ‘Uyayna from ‘Umar ibn Yazid who has said the following: “I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) saying, ‘Expressing one’s thankfulness for any favor, no matter how great it may be, is to thank Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, for it.’”

12ـ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ عَنْ سَيْفِ بْنِ عَمِيرَةَ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لأبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) هَلْ لِلشُّكْرِ حَدٌّ إِذَا فَعَلَهُ الْعَبْدُ كَانَ شَاكِراً قَالَ نَعَمْ قُلْتُ مَا هُوَ قَالَ يَحْمَدُ الله عَلَى كُلِّ نِعْمَةٍ عَلَيْهِ فِي أَهْلٍ وَمَالٍ وَإِنْ كَانَ فِيمَا أَنْعَمَ عَلَيْهِ فِي مَالِهِ حَقٌّ أَدَّاهُ وَمِنْهُ قَوْلُهُ جَلَّ وَعَزَّ سُبْحانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنا هذا وَما كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَمِنْهُ قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى رَبِّ أَنْزِلْنِي مُنْزَلاً مُبارَكاً وَأَنْتَ خَيْرُ الْمُنْزِلِينَ وَقَوْلُهُ رَبِّ أَدْخِلْنِي مُدْخَلَ صِدْقٍ وَأَخْرِجْنِي مُخْرَجَ صِدْقٍ وَاجْعَلْ لِي مِنْ لَدُنْكَ سُلْطاناً نَصِيراً.
12. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from Isma’il ibn Mehran from Sayf ibn ‘Amirah from abu Basir who has said the following: “I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) ‘Is there a limit for the expression of thankfulness, upon which a servant is considered a thankful one?’ “The Imam said, ‘Yes, there is a limit.’ I then asked, ‘What is that limit?’ The Imam said, ‘One must thank Allah for every favor that He has done, such as family and properties. If on the property one has received there is a certain right it must be paid off as is mentioned in the words of Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, quoting certain people, “Glory belongs to Him who has made it subservient to us when we were not able to do so ourselves.” (43:13) He, the Most High, has also said quoting certain people, “Lord, grant us a blessed landing from the Ark; You are the One who provides the safest landing” (23:29). Allah has also said, “(Muhammad), say, ‘Lord, make me enter through a path that will lead to the Truth and come out of an exit that will take me to the Truth. Grant me supportive authority.””” (17:80)

13ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ مُعَمَّرِ بْنِ خَلادٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ صَلَوَاتُ الله عَلَيْهِ يَقُولُ مَنْ حَمِدَ الله عَلَى النِّعْمَةِ فَقَدْ شَكَرَهُ وَكَانَ الْحَمْدُ أَفْضَلَ مِنْ تِلْكَ النِّعْمَةِ.
13. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Mu’ammar ibn Khallad who has said the following: “I heard Abu al-Hassan (a.s.) saying, ‘One’s praising Allah for His granting him bounties is considered his expressing thanks to Allah and expressing the praise of Allah, is better than the bounties one has received.’”

14ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ الْجَمَّالِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ قَالَ لِي مَا أَنْعَمَ الله عَلَى عَبْدٍ بِنِعْمَةٍ صَغُرَتْ أَوْ كَبُرَتْ فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لله إِلا أَدَّى شُكْرَهَا.
14. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad from Ali ibn al-Hakam from Safwan al-Jammal from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘For any favor that Allah may grant to any one of His servants, a small or a greater favor, if that servant says “All praise belongs to Allah,” has thanked Him properly.’”

15ـ أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الأشْعَرِيُّ عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مَهْزِيَارَ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ مَنْ أَنْعَمَ الله عَلَيْهِ بِنِعْمَةٍ فَعَرَفَهَا بِقَلْبِهِ فَقَدْ أَدَّى شُكْرَهَا.
15. Abu Ali al-Ash’ari has narrated from ‘Isa ibn Ayyub from Ali ibn Mahziyar from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad from Isma’il ibn abu al-Hassan from a man from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘Whoever receives a favor from Allah and acknowledges it in his heart, in so doing he has expressed his thankfuness for it also.”’

16ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ يُونُسَ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ مِنْكُمْ لَيَشْرَبُ الشَّرْبَةَ مِنَ الْمَاءِ فَيُوجِبُ الله لَهُ بِهَا الْجَنَّةَ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّهُ لَيَأْخُذُ الإنَاءَ فَيَضَعُهُ عَلَى فِيهِ فَيُسَمِّي ثُمَّ يَشْرَبُ فَيُنَحِّيهِ وَهُوَ يَشْتَهِيهِ فَيَحْمَدُ الله ثُمَّ يَعُودُ فَيَشْرَبُ ثُمَّ يُنَحِّيهِ فَيَحْمَدُ الله ثُمَّ يَعُودُ فَيَشْرَبُ ثُمَّ يُنَحِّيهِ فَيَحْمَدُ الله فَيُوجِبُ الله عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بِهَا لَهُ الْجَنَّةَ.
16. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Mansur ibn Yunus from abu Basir who has said the following: “Once Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) said, ‘One of you drinks water and for this Allah admits him into paradise.’ The Imam then said, ‘He picks up the bowl of water and places it in his mouth, then mentions the name of Allah and then he drinks. He then removes it from his mouth and expresses praise for Allah, even though he still has a desire to drink. He then drinks and removes the bowl of water from his mouth and expresses praise for Allah. He then drinks and then removes and expresses praise for Allah. Thus, Allah, the Majestic, the Glorious, deems his admission to paradise necessary.’”

17ـ ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَطِيَّةَ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ قَالَ قُلْتُ لأبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) إِنِّي سَأَلْتُ الله عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَنْ يَرْزُقَنِي مَالاً فَرَزَقَنِي وَإِنِّي سَأَلْتُ الله أَنْ يَرْزُقَنِي وَلَداً فَرَزَقَنِي وَلَداً وَسَأَلْتُهُ أَنْ يَرْزُقَنِي دَاراً فَرَزَقَنِي وَقَدْ خِفْتُ أَنْ يَكُونَ ذَلِكَ اسْتِدْرَاجاً فَقَالَ أَمَا وَالله مَعَ الْحَمْدِ فَلا.
17. Ibn abu ‘Umayr has narrated from al-Hassan ibn ‘Atiyyah from ‘Umar ibn Yazid who has said the following: “Once I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) ‘I prayed to Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, for property and He granted me. I prayed to Allah for a child and He granted me. I prayed to Him for a house and He granted me. I am afraid that it (coming true of my wishes) is a kind of leading me to my own destruction (gradually)’ The Imam said, ‘I swear by Allah, it is not so if it takes place along with expressing His praise.’”

18ـ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَلَّى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْوَشَّاءِ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ قَالَ خَرَجَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ وَقَدْ ضَاعَتْ دَابَّتُهُ فَقَالَ لَئِنْ رَدَّهَا الله عَلَيَّ لأشْكُرَنَّ الله حَقَّ شُكْرِهِ قَالَ فَمَا لَبِثَ أَنْ أُتِيَ بِهَا فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لله فَقَالَ لَهُ قَائِلٌ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ أَ لَيْسَ قُلْتَ لأشْكُرَنَّ الله حَقَّ شُكْرِهِ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) أَ لَمْ تَسْمَعْنِي قُلْتُ الْحَمْدُ لله.
18. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Mu’alla ibn Muhammad from al- Washsha’ from Hammad ibn ‘Uthman who has said the following: “Once Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) came out of the Mosque and his animal that he had ridden was missing. The Imam said, ‘If Allah will return my animal I will thank Him the way He must be thanked.’ Not long thereafter his animal was brought back. The Imam said, ‘All praise belongs to Allah.’ Someone then said, ‘May Allah keep my soul in service for your cause, did you not say, “I will thank Allah the way He must be thanked?’” The Imam said, ‘Did you not hear me saying, “All praise belongs to Allah?’””

19ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ جَدِّهِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ عَنِ الْمُثَنَّى الْحَنَّاطِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ الله (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وآلِه) إِذَا وَرَدَ عَلَيْهِ أَمْرٌ يَسُرُّهُ قَالَ الْحَمْدُ لله عَلَى هَذِهِ النِّعْمَةِ وَإِذَا وَرَدَ عَلَيْهِ أَمْرٌ يَغْتَمُّ بِهِ قَالَ الْحَمْدُ لله عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ.
19. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from al-Qasim ibn Yahya from his grandfather al-Hassan ibn Rashid from al- Muthanna al-Hannat from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘If the Messenger of Allah were to receive happy news he would say, “All praise belongs to Allah, for His granting this favor.” Whenever he was to receive a sad news he would say, “All praise belongs to Allah in all conditions.’””

20ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الْخَزَّازِ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ تَقُولُ ثَلاثَ مَرَّاتٍ إِذَا نَظَرْتَ إِلَى الْمُبْتَلَى مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ تُسْمِعَهُ الْحَمْدُ لله الَّذِي عَافَانِي مِمَّا ابْتَلاكَ بِهِ وَلَوْ شَاءَ فَعَلَ قَالَ مَنْ قَالَ ذَلِكَ لَمْ يُصِبْهُ ذَلِكَ الْبَلاءُ أَبَداً.
20. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from abu Ayyub al-Khazzaz from abu Basir from abu Ja’far (a.s.) who has said the following: “Abu Ja’far (a.s.) has said, ‘Say three times when you see an ailing person without making him hear it, “All praise belongs to Allah for his keeping me safe from that with which you are afflicted. Had You (the Lord) wanted You could have made me suffer from this also.’” The Imam said, ‘Whoever says this he will never be afflicted with such ailment.’”

21ـ حُمَيْدُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَمَاعَةَ عَنْ غَيْرِ وَاحِدٍ عَنْ أَبَانِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ حَفْصٍ الْكُنَاسِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ يَرَى مُبْتَلىً فَيَقُولُ الْحَمْدُ لله الَّذِي عَدَلَ عَنِّي مَا ابْتَلاكَ بِهِ وَفَضَّلَنِي عَلَيْكَ بِالْعَافِيَةِ اللهمَّ عَافِنِي مِمَّا ابْتَلَيْتَهُ بِهِ إِلا لَمْ يُبْتَلَ بِذَلِكَ الْبَلاءِ.
21. Hamid ibn Ziyad has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Muhammad ibn Sama’a from more than one person from Aban ibn ‘Uthman from Hafs al-Kunansi from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘Anyone who upon seeing an ailing person says, “All praise belongs to Allah Who has avoided afflicting me with what He has afflict you and has given preference to me over you in granting a good health. O Allah, grant me good health against the ailment with which he is afflicted.” He, because of this prayer, will not suffer from such an ailment.’”

22ـ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ نَجِيحٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ إِذَا رَأَيْتَ الرَّجُلَ وَقَدِ ابْتُلِيَ وَأَنْعَمَ الله عَلَيْكَ فَقُلِ اللهمَّ إِنِّي لا أَسْخَرُ وَلا أَفْخَرُ وَلَكِنْ أَحْمَدُكَ عَلَى عَظِيمِ نَعْمَائِكَ عَلَيَّ.
22. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn ‘Abd Allah from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Khalid ibn Najih from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘When you see a man who is in affliction and Allah has granted you a favor, say, “O Allah, I do not ridicule him or boast, but I express Your praise for the great favors that You have done for me.”’”

23ـ عَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ الْجَهْمِ عَنْ حَفْصِ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ الله (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وآلِه) إِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ أَهْلَ الْبَلاءِ فَاحْمَدُوا الله وَلا تُسْمِعُوهُمْ فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ يَحْزُنُهُمْ.
23. It is narrated from him (narrator of the Hadith above) from his father from Harun ibn al-Jahm from Hafs ibn ‘Umar from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “The Messenger of Allah has said, ‘When you see people who are in affliction, express the praise of Allah but do not make them hear it; it may cause them to feel sad.’”

24ـ عَنْهُ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ مُسْكَانَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ الله (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وآلِه) كَانَ فِي سَفَرٍ يَسِيرُ عَلَى نَاقَةٍ لَهُ إِذَا نَزَلَ فَسَجَدَ خَمْسَ سَجَدَاتٍ فَلَمَّا أَنْ رَكِبَ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ الله إِنَّا رَأَيْنَاكَ صَنَعْتَ شَيْئاً لَمْ تَصْنَعْهُ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ اسْتَقْبَلَنِي جَبْرَئِيلُ (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) فَبَشَّرَنِي بِبِشَارَاتٍ مِنَ الله عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فَسَجَدْتُ لله شُكْراً لِكُلِّ بُشْرَى سَجْدَةً.
24. It is narrated from him (narrator of the Hadith above) from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from ‘Abd Allah ibn Muskan from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “The Messenger of Allah once was on a small journey on his camel. He dismounted and prostrated five times. When he mounted the camel they said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, we saw you do what we had not seen you do before.’ He said, ‘Yes, it is true, but Jibril came to me with much good news from Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, and I then made one prostration in gratitude for each word of good news.’”

25ـ عَنْهُ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ إِذَا ذَكَرَ أَحَدُكُمْ نِعْمَةَ الله عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فَلْيَضَعْ خَدَّهُ عَلَى التُّرَابِ شُكْراً لله فَإِنْ كَانَ رَاكِباً فَلْيَنْزِلْ فَلْيَضَعْ خَدَّهُ عَلَى التُّرَابِ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ يَقْدِرُ عَلَى النُّزُولِ لِلشُّهْرَةِ فَلْيَضَعْ خَدَّهُ عَلَى قَرَبُوسِهِ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَقْدِرْ فَلْيَضَعْ خَدَّهُ عَلَى كَفِّهِ ثُمَّ لْيَحْمَدِ الله عَلَى مَا أَنْعَمَ عَلَيْهِ.
25. It is narrated from him (narrator of the Hadith above) from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Isa from Yunus ibn ‘Ammar from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “When any of you may remember or speak of the bounties of Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, he should place his cheek on the soil as an expression of gratitude to Allah. If one is riding one should dismount and place one’s cheek on the soil. If he is not able to do so because of his avoiding publicity, should place his cheek on the saddle. If this also cannot be done he should place his cheek on his palm, then thank Allah for the favor that He has done for him.”

26ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَطِيَّةَ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ أَحْمَرَ قَالَ كُنْتُ أَسِيرُ مَعَ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) فِي بَعْضِ أَطْرَافِ الْمَدِينَةِ إِذْ ثَنَى رِجْلَهُ عَنْ دَابَّتِهِ فَخَرَّ سَاجِداً فَأَطَالَ وَأَطَالَ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ وَرَكِبَ دَابَّتَهُ فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ قَدْ أَطَلْتَ السُّجُودَ فَقَالَ إِنَّنِي ذَكَرْتُ نِعْمَةً أَنْعَمَ الله بِهَا عَلَيَّ فَأَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ أَشْكُرَ رَبِّي.
26. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Ali ibn ‘ Atiyah from Hisham ibn Ahmar who has said the following: “Once I was walking with abu al-Hassan (a.s.) on a certain side of the city of Madina. He joined his legs on one side of the animal he was riding, dismounted and went to prostrate on the ground. He prolonged and prolonged the prostration. He then raised his head and mounted the animal. I then said, ‘May Allah keep my soul in service for your cause, you had a very long prostration.’ The Imam said, ‘1 just remembered a favor that Allah had granted me and I loved for it to thank my Lord.’”

27ـ عَلِيٌّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله صَاحِبِ السَّابِرِيِّ فِيمَا أَعْلَمُ أَوْ غَيْرِهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ فِيمَا أَوْحَى الله عَزَّ وَجَلَّ إِلَى مُوسَى (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) يَا مُوسَى اشْكُرْنِي حَقَّ شُكْرِي فَقَالَ يَا رَبِّ وَكَيْفَ أَشْكُرُكَ حَقَّ شُكْرِكَ وَلَيْسَ مِنْ شُكْرٍ أَشْكُرُكَ بِهِ إِلا وَأَنْتَ أَنْعَمْتَ بِهِ عَلَيَّ قَالَ يَا مُوسَى الآنَ شَكَرْتَنِي حِينَ عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ ذَلِكَ مِنِّي.
27. Ali has narrated from father from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr from abu ‘Abd Allah Sahib al- Sabiri as I know or other people from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘Of the things that Allah, the Most Majestic, the Most Holy, revealed to Moses was this: “O Moses, thank Me the way I must be thanked.” Moses said, “O Lord, how can 1 thank You the way You must be thanked while there is no thanking that I may perform but that in it You grant me a (new) favor.” Allah said, “Now you have thanked Me, for realizing that it (the ability to thank) is also from Me.”’”

28ـ ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ رِئَابٍ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) إِذَا أَصْبَحْتَ وَأَمْسَيْتَ فَقُلْ عَشْرَ مَرَّاتٍ اللهمَّ مَا أَصْبَحَتْ بِي مِنْ نِعْمَةٍ أَوْ عَافِيَةٍ مِنْ دِينٍ أَوْ دُنْيَا فَمِنْكَ وَحْدَكَ لا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ وَلَكَ الشُّكْرُ بِهَا عَلَيَّ يَا رَبِّ حَتَّى تَرْضَى وَبَعْدَ الرِّضَا فَإِنَّكَ إِذَا قُلْتَ ذَلِكَ كُنْتَ قَدْ أَدَّيْتَ شُكْرَ مَا أَنْعَمَ الله بِهِ عَلَيْكَ فِي ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ وَفِي تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةِ.
28. Ibn abu ‘Umayr has narrated from ibn Ri’ab from Isma’il ibn al-Fadl who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘In the morning and evening say ten times: “O Lord, every morning I find myself with a favor and the well-being of the world or the hereafter. All such favors are from You, from You alone, and no one is Your partner. All praise belongs to You and thanks to You for Your favors to me, O Lord, until You are happy with me. Thanks to You even after Your being happy with me.”’ If you say this you have thanked Allah for what He has granted you on that day and on that night.”

29ـ ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ حَفْصِ بْنِ الْبَخْتَرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ كَانَ نُوحٌ (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ فَسُمِّيَ بِذَلِكَ عَبْداً شَكُوراً وَقَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ الله (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وآلِه) مَنْ صَدَقَ الله نَجَا.
29. Ibn abu ‘Umayr has narrated from Hafs ibn al-Bakhtari from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Abu Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘Noah would say the prayer in the previous Hadith every morning and for that reason he is called a thankful person.’ The Imam said, ‘The Messenger of Allah has said, “Whoever accepts the truth from Allah, gains his salvation.”’”

30ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْمِنْقَرِيِّ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنْ عَمَّارٍ الدُّهْنِيِّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَلِيَّ بْنَ الْحُسَيْنِ (عَلَيهِما السَّلام) يَقُولُ إِنَّ الله يُحِبُّ كُلَّ قَلْبٍ حَزِينٍ وَيُحِبُّ كُلَّ عَبْدٍ شَكُورٍ يَقُولُ الله تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى لِعَبْدٍ مِنْ عَبِيدِهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ أَ شَكَرْتَ فُلاناً فَيَقُولُ بَلْ شَكَرْتُكَ يَا رَبِّ فَيَقُولُ لَمْ تَشْكُرْنِي إِذْ لَمْ تَشْكُرْهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَشْكَرُكُمْ لله أَشْكَرُكُمْ لِلنَّاسِ.
30. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad from al-Minqari from Sufyan ibn ‘Uyayna from ‘Ammar al-Dihni who has said the following: “Allah loves every sad heart and He loves every thankful servant. Allah, the Most Blessed, the Most High, on the Day of Judgment will say to a servant among His servants, ‘Did you thank so and so?’ He (that servant) will say, ‘No, but 1 thanked You, O Lord.’ Allah will say, ‘You have not thanked Me because you did not thank him.’ The Imam said, ‘The most thankful among you to Allah is the most thankful among you to people.’”
