Confessing Sins and Regret for it

1
1ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ الأحْمَسِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ وَالله مَا يَنْجُو مِنَ الذَّنْبِ إِلا مَنْ أَقَرَّ بِهِ. قَالَ وَقَالَ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) كَفَى بِالنَّدَمِ تَوْبَةً.
1. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu‘Umayr from Ali al- Ahmasi from abu Ja’far (a.s.) who has said the following: “Abu Ja’far (a.s.) has said, ‘By Allah no one escapes sins except those who confess it.’ The narrator has said that abu Ja’far (a.s.) then said, ‘Repenting is enough proof of one’s being regretful.’”

2ـ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَمَّنْ ذَكَرَهُ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ لا وَالله مَا أَرَادَ الله تَعَالَى مِنَ النَّاسِ إِلا خَصْلَتَيْنِ أَنْ يُقِرُّوا لَهُ بِالنِّعَمِ فَيَزِيدَهُمْ وَبِالذُّنُوبِ فَيَغْفِرَهَا لَهُمْ.
2. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn Faddal from those whom has mentioned (in his book) from abu Ja’far (a.s.) who has said the following: “Abu Ja’far (a.s.) has said, ‘By Allah, Allah, the Most High, wants two characteristics from people: to confess that He has granted them favors so He will increase them and to confess their sins so He will forgive them.”’

3ـ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيُذْنِبُ الذَّنْبَ فَيُدْخِلُهُ الله بِهِ الْجَنَّةَ قُلْتُ يُدْخِلُهُ الله بِالذَّنْبِ الْجَنَّةَ قَالَ نَعَمْ إِنَّهُ لَيُذْنِبُ فَلا يَزَالُ مِنْهُ خَائِفاً مَاقِتاً لِنَفْسِهِ فَيَرْحَمُهُ الله فَيُدْخِلُهُ الْجَنَّةَ.
3. Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ‘Umar (‘Amr) ibn ‘Uthman from certain individuals of his people who has said the following: “I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) saying, ‘A man commits a sin and because of it Allah will admit him in paradise.’ I asked, ‘Will Allah admit him in paradise because of his sin?’ The Imam said, ‘Yes, he commits a sin and continues living in fear, and angry on his own self. Allah then grants him mercy and admits him in paradise.’”

4ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) يَقُولُ إِنَّهُ وَالله مَا خَرَجَ عَبْدٌ مِنْ ذَنْبٍ بِإِصْرَارٍ وَمَا خَرَجَ عَبْدٌ مِنْ ذَنْبٍ إِلا بِإِقْرَارٍ.
4. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Muhammad ibn Sinan from Mu’awiyah ibn ‘ Ammar who has said the following: “I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) saying, ‘By Allah a servant cannot get out of sin while persisting in it and a servant cannot get out of sin without confessing to it.’”

5ـ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ الْحَجَّاجِ السَّبِيعِيِّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ وَلِيدٍ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ مَنْ أَذْنَبَ ذَنْباً فَعَلِمَ أَنَّ الله مُطَّلِعٌ عَلَيْهِ إِنْ شَاءَ عَذَّبَهُ وَإِنْ شَاءَ غَفَرَ لَهُ غَفَرَ لَهُ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَغْفِرْ.
5. Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad has narrated from Muhammad ibn ‘Imran ibn al- Hajjaj al-Subay’i (from Muhammad ibn Walid) from Yunus ibn Ya’qub who has said the following: “I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) saying, ‘If one commits a sin and knows that Allah is aware of it. He punishes him if He so wills or forgives him if He so wills. In such case. He (Allah) forgives him even if he does not ask forgiveness.’”

6ـ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي هَاشِمٍ عَنْ عَنْبَسَةَ الْعَابِدِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ إِنَّ الله يُحِبُّ الْعَبْدَ أَنْ يَطْلُبَ إِلَيْهِ فِي الْجُرْمِ الْعَظِيمِ وَيُبْغِضُ الْعَبْدَ أَنْ يَسْتَخِفَّ بِالْجُرْمِ الْيَسِيرِ.
6. A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid from Muhammad ibn Ali from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad ibn abu Hashim from ‘Anbasah al-‘Abid from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Abu ‘Abd Allah (a.s.) has said, ‘Allah loves that a servant asks Him for help in great crimes and He hates the servant who considers trivial sins insignificant.’”

7ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ سَهْلٍ عَنْ حَمَّادٍ عَنْ رِبْعِيٍّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) قَالَ قَالَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وآلِه) إِنَّ النَّدَمَ عَلَى الشَّرِّ يَدْعُو إِلَى تَرْكِهِ.
7. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa from Isma’il ibn Sahl from Hammad from Rib’i from Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) who has said the following: “Amir al-Mu’minin, Ali ibn abu Talib (a.s.) has said, ‘Regret for an evil deed leads one to stay away from it.’”

8ـ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ الدَّقَّاقِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الله بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ زَيْدٍ الْقَتَّاتِ عَنْ أَبَانِ بْنِ تَغْلِبَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الله (عَلَيهِ السَّلام) يَقُولُ مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ أَذْنَبَ ذَنْباً فَنَدِمَ عَلَيْهِ إِلا غَفَرَ الله لَهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَسْتَغْفِرَ وَمَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ أَنْعَمَ الله عَلَيْهِ نِعْمَةً فَعَرَفَ أَنَّهَا مِنْ عِنْدِ الله إِلا غَفَرَ الله لَهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَحْمَدَهُ.
8. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from al-Husayn al-Daqqaq from ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad from Ahmad ibn ‘Umar from Zayd al-Qattat from Aban ibn Taghlib who has said the following: “I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (a.s.) saying, ‘If a servant commits a sin and then regrets, Allah forgives him before he asks forgiveness. If a servant receives a favor from Allah and he learns that it is from Allah, He grants him forgiveness (protection) before he offers his thanks.’”
