Reward of Salaat-e-Shab

حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الصَّفَّارُ عَنِ الْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ مَعْرُوفٍ عَنْ سَعْدَانَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: شَرَفُ الْمُؤْمِنِ صَلَاهُ اللَّیْلِ وَ عِزُّ الْمُؤْمِنِ کَفُّهُ عَنِ النَّاسِ.
1. It was narrated to me by Muhammad b. al-Hassan who said it was narrated to me by Muhammad b. al-Hassan al-Saffar from al-Abbas b. Ma’ruf from Sa’dan b. Muslim from Abdillah b. Sinan from Abi Abdillah (a.s.) who said: “The honor of a believer is in offering Salaat-e-Shab and his prestige is in not asking from people.”

أَبِی ره قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ یَحْیَی الْعَطَّارُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی أَبُو زُهَیْرٍ النَّهْدِیُّ عَنْ آدَمَ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ مُعَاوِیَهَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِهِ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: عَلَیْکُمْ بِصَلَاهِ اللَّیْلِ فَإِنَّهَا سُنَّهُ نَبِیِّکُمْ وَ دَأْبُ الصَّالِحِینَ قَبْلَکُمْ وَ مَطْرَدَهُ الدَّاءِ عَنْ أَجْسَادِکُمْ.
2. My father (rah) said: it was narrated to me by Muhammad b. Yahya al-’Attar who said it was narrated to me by Muhammad b. Ahmad who said it was narrated to me by Abu Zuhayr al-Hindi from Adam b. Ishaq from Muawiyah b. Ammar from some of his companions from Abi Abdillah (a.s.) who said: “Offer Salaat-e-Shab for it is the Sunnah of Muhammad (s.a.w.s.) and the virtuous that came before you. It removes all the ailments from your body.”

وَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع صَلَاهُ اللَّیْلِ تُبَیِّضُ الْوُجُوهَ وَ صَلَاهُ اللَّیْلِ تُطَیِّبُ الرِّیحَ وَ صَلَاهُ اللَّیْلِ تَجْلِبُ الرِّزْقَ.
3. Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s.) says, “Salaat-e-Shab brightens the face. It imparts a sweet smell and increase in earnings.”

حَدَّثَنِی أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَبِیهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَلِیِّ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَمَّنْ حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: إِنْ کَانَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ قَدْ قَالَ- الْمالُ وَ الْبَنُونَ زِینَهُ الْحَیاهِ الدُّنْیا إِنَّ الثَّمَانَ رَکَعَاتٍ الَّتِی یُصَلِّیهَا الْعَبْدُ آخِرَ اللَّیْلِ زِینَهُ الْآخِرَهِ.
4. It was narrated to me by Ahmad b. Muhammad from his father from Muhammad b. Ahmad from Umar b. Ali b. Umar from the one the person that narrated to him from Abi Abdillah (a.s.) who said: ‘Wealth and children are the adornment of life’, surely the eight rakat prayer offered in the last part of night is the adornment of the Hereafter.”

وَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَنَّهُ جَاءَهُ رَجُلٌ فَشَکَا إِلَیْهِ الْحَاجَهَ فَأَفْرَطَ فِی الشِّکَایَهِ حَتَّی کَادَ أَنْ یَشْکُوَ الْجُوعَ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع یَا هَذَا أَ تُصَلِّی بِاللَّیْلِ قَالَ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ نَعَمْ قَالَ فَالْتَفَتَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِلَی صَاحِبِهِ فَقَالَ کَذَبَ مَنْ زَعَمَ أَنَّهُ یُصَلِّی بِاللَّیْلِ وَ یَجُوعُ بِالنَّهَارِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ ضَمِنَ بِصَلَاهِ اللَّیْلِ قُوتَ النَّهَارِ.
5. It is narrated from Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s.) that a person came to him and expressed his wish. He was about to complain of his starvation when Imam asked him, “Do you offer Salaat-e-Shab?” He said, “Yes.” Imam turned to him and said, “He is a liar that claims to offer Salaat-e-Shab and says that he has to starve during the day, because the Almighty Allah has guaranteed the sustenance of the day in the Salaat-e-Shab.”

أَبِی ره قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی سَعْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِیسَی عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ یَحْیَی عَنْ جَدِّهِ الْحُسَیْنِ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ عَنْ أَبِی بَصِیرٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی أَبِی عَنْ جَدِّهِ عَنْ آبَائِهِ عَنْ عَلِیِّ بْنِ أَبِی طَالِبٍ ع قَالَ: قِیَامُ اللَّیْلِ مَصَحَّهٌ لِلْبَدَنِ وَ رِضَاءُ الرَّبِّ وَ تَمَسُّکٌ بِأَخْلَاقِ النَّبِیِّینَ وَ تَعَرُّضٌ لِرَحْمَهِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَی.
6. My father (rah) said: it was narrated to me by Sa’d b. Abdillah from Muhammad b. Isa from al-Qasim b. Yahya from his grandfather al-Hussain b. Rashid from Abi Basir from Abi Abdillah (a.s.) who said it was narrated to me by Abi from his grandfather from his forefathers from Ali b. Abi Talib (a.s.) who said: “Salaat-e-Shab is related to the safety of body, pleasure of Lord, character of the prophets and it attracts the Mercy of Allah.”

أَبِی ره قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی سَعْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُوسَی بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ الْبَغْدَادِیِّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ شَمُّونٍ عَنْ عَلِیِّ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ النَّوْفَلِیِّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ یَقُولُ إِنَّ الْعَبْدَ لَیَقُومُ فِی اللَّیْلِ فَیَمِیلُ بِهِ النُّعَاسُ یَمِیناً وَ شِمَالًا وَ قَدْ وَقَعَ ذَقَنُهُ عَلَی صَدْرِهِ فَیَأْمُرُ اللَّهُ تَبَارَکَ وَ تَعَالَی أَبْوَابَ السَّمَاءِ فَتُفَتَّحُ ثُمَّ یَقُولُ لِلْمَلَائِکَهِ انْظُرُوا إِلَی عَبْدِی مَا یُصِیبُهُ فِی التَّقَرُّبِ إِلَیَّ بِمَا لَمْ أَفْتَرِضْ عَلَیْهِ رَاجِیاً مِنِّی لِثَلَاثِ خِصَالٍ ذَنْباً أَغْفِرُهُ لَهُ أَوْ تَوْبَهً أُجَدِّدُهَا لَهُ أَوْ رِزْقاً أَزِیدُهُ فِیهِ فَأُشْهِدُکُمْ مَلَائِکَتِی أَنِّی قَدْ جَمَعْتُهُنَّ لَهُ.
7. The narrator says, “I heard him say that if one gets up at night after turning to his left and right in such a state that his chin is touching his chest (out of tiredness), Allah orders the doors of heavens to be opened and says to His angels: ‘Look at this servant of Mine. He is going to perform what is not even obligatory for him. He can expect three things from Me – that I forgive all his sins, I give him a chance to repent once again and increase his earnings. I hold you all angels as witness that I would grant all these things to him’.”

حَدَّثَنِی الْحَسَنُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ عَنْ أَبِیهِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِیِّ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ وَ أَبُو عُثْمَانَ اسْمُهُ عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ حَبِیبٍ قَالَ زَعَمَ لَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِی حَمْزَهَ الثُّمَالِیُّ عَنْ مُعَاوِیَهَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ الدُّهْنِیِّ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: صَلَاهُ اللَّیْلِ تُحَسِّنُ الْوَجْهَ وَ تُحَسِّنُ الْخُلُقَ وَ تُطَیِّبُ الرِّیحَ وَ تُدِرُّ الرِّزْقَ وَ تَقْضِی الدَّیْنَ وَ تَذْهَبُ بِالْهَمِّ وَ تَجْلُو الْبَصَرَ.
8. It was narrated to me by al-Hassan b. Ahmad from his father who said it was narrated to me by Muhammad b. Ahmad who said it was narrated to me by Muhammad b. Abdillah from Ahmad b. al-Hassan b. Ali b. Uthman and Abu Uthman his name is Abd al-Wahid b. Habeeb who said claimed to us Muhammad b. Abi Hamzah al-Thumali from Muawiyah b. Ammar al-Duhni from Abi Abdillah (a.s.) who said: “Salaat-e-Shab beautifies one’s face, improves one’s character, fragrances the body and increases earnings. It helps in repayment of debts, removal of sorrows and improves eyesight.”

حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ یَحْیَی عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ زِیَادٍ عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ عَلِیِّ بْنِ الْحَکَمِ عَنِ الْحُسَیْنِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ الْکِنْدِیِّ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَیَکْذِبُ الْکَذِبَهَ فَیُحْرَمُ بِهَا رِزْقَهُ قُلْتُ وَ کَیْفَ یُحْرَمُ رِزْقَهُ فَقَالَ یُحْرَمُ بِهَا صَلَاهَ اللَّیْلِ فَإِذَا حُرِمَ صَلَاهَ اللَّیْلِ حُرِمَ الرِّزْقَ.
9. It was narrated to me by Muhammad b. al-Hassan who said it was narrated to me by Muhammad b. Yahya from Muhammad b. Ahmad from Sahl b. Ziyad from Harun b. Muslim from Ali b. al-Hakam from al-Hussain b. al-Hassan al-Kindi from Abi Abdillah (a.s.) who said: “It is possible that a person lies and is deprived of his sustenance.” The narrator asked, “How can he be deprived of his sustenance?” Imam (a.s.) replied, “By getting deprived from Salaat-e-Shab. One who is deprived of Salaat-e-Shab is (also) deprived of his sustenance.”

أَبِی ره قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ الْحِمْیَرِیُّ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ جَمِیلٍ عَنْ فُضَیْلٍ عَنْ أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع قَالَ: إِنَّ الْبُیُوتَ الَّتِی یُصَلَّی فِیهَا بِاللَّیْلِ بِتِلَاوَهِ الْقُرْآنِ تُضِی ءُ لِأَهْلِ السَّمَاءِ کَمَا تُضِی ءُ نُجُومُ السَّمَاءِ لِأَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ.
10. My father (rah) said: it was narrated to me by Abdillah b. Ja’far al-Himyari from Ahmad b. Muhammad from al-Hassan b. Mahbub from Jameel from Fudhayl from Abi Abdillah (a.s.) who said: “The houses, in which the Holy Quran is recited along with Salaat-e-Shab appear bright to the people of heaven in the same way as stars appear to the people of the world.”

حَدَّثَنِی مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِی الْحُسَیْنُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ أَبَانٍ عَنِ الْحُسَیْنِ بْنِ سَعِیدٍ عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عِیسَی عَنْ إِبْرَاهِیمَ بْنِ عُمَرَ رَفَعَهُ إِلَی أَبِی عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع فِی قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ- إِنَّ الْحَسَناتِ یُذْهِبْنَ السَّیِّئاتِ قَالَ صَلَاهُ الْمُؤْمِنِ بِاللَّیْلِ تَذْهَبُ بِمَا عَمِلَ مِنْ ذَنْبٍ بِالنَّهَارِ.
11. Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s.) explains the statement of Allah that ‘Good deeds destroy sins’ by saying, “The Salaat offered by a believer at night destroys the sins committed by him during the day.”
