The Reward for Establishing the Obligatory and “Nāfilah” Prayers Next to the Grave of Ĥusain (a.s.)

1 حَدَّثَنِي جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْمُوسَوِيُّ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نَهِيكٍ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ (ع) قَالَ قَالَ لِرَجُلٍ يَا فُلَانُ مَا يَمْنَعُكَ إِذَا عَرَضَتْ لَكَ حَاجَةٌ أَنْ تَأْتِيَ قَبْرَ الْحُسَيْنِ (ع) فَتُصَلِّيَ عِنْدَهُ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ ثُمَّ تَسْأَلَ حَاجَتَكَ فَإِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ الْفَرِيضَةَ عِنْدَهُ تَعْدِلُ حِجَّةً- وَ النَّافِلَةَ تَعْدِلُ عُمْرَةً
1. Ja’far ibn Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm Al-Mūsawi narrated to me from ‘Ubaydillāh ibn Nahīk, from Ibn Abī ‘Umayr, from someone who said: Abu Ja’far (Imam Bāqir (a.s.)) said to a man: O so-and-so! What prevents you at times of need from going to the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.), praying four Rak’ah, and then asking (Allāh) for your needs?! Verily establishing an obligatory prayer next to his grave is equal to performing a Hajj and establishing a Nāfilah prayer (next to his grave) is equal to performing an ‘Umrah.

2 حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي وَ جَمَاعَةُ مَشَايِخِي عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْجَامُورَانِيِّ الرَّازِيِّ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْكَرِيمِ أَبِي عَلِيٍّ عَنِ الْمُفَضَّلِ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ جَابِرٍ الْجُعْفِيِّ قَالَ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) لِلْمُفَضَّلِ فِي حَدِيثٍ طَوِيلٍ فِي زِيَارَةِ قَبْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ (ع) ثُمَّ تَمْضِي إِلَى صَلَاتِكَ وَ لَكَ بِكُلِّ رَكْعَةٍ رَكَعْتَهَا عِنْدَهُ- كَثَوَابِ مَنْ حَجَّ أَلْفَ حِجَّةٍ وَ اعْتَمَرَ أَلْفَ عُمْرَةٍ وَ أَعْتَقَ أَلْفَ رَقَبَةٍ وَ كَأَنَّمَا وَقَفَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَلْفَ مَرَّةٍ مَعَ نَبِيٍّ مُرْسَلٍ وَ ذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ
2. My father and all of my scholars narrated to me from Sa’d ibn ‘Abdillāh, from Abī ‘Abdillāh Al-Jāmūrāni Al-Rāzi, from Ḥasan ibn ‘Ali ibn Abī Ḥmazah, from Abī ‘Ali Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad ibn ‘Abdil Karīm, from Mufaďďāl ibn ‘Umar, from Jābir Al-Ju’fi, who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) said to Mufaďďal – as part of a longer Ḥadīth about performing the Ziyārah of the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.): …then carry on with establishing prayers, for you shall have the reward of performing one thousand Hajj and one thousand ‘Umrah, freeing one thousand slaves, and fighting in the way of Allāh one thousand times with one of Allāh’s messengers for every Rak’ah of prayer next to the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.).

3 حَدَّثَنِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى الْعَطَّارِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ وَ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ مَتٍّ الْجَوْهَرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَحْمَدَ عَنْ هَارُونَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَلِيٍّ الْحَرَّانِيِّ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) مَا لِمَنْ زَارَ قَبْرَ الْحُسَيْنِ (ع) قَالَ مَنْ أَتَاهُ وَ زَارَهُ وَ صَلَّى عِنْدَهُ رَكْعَتَيْنِ أَوْ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ كَتَبَ اللَّهُ [كُتِبَتْ] لَهُ حِجَّةً وَ عُمْرَةً قَالَ قُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ وَ كَذَلِكَ لِكُلِّ مَنْ أَتَى قَبْرَ إِمَامٍ مُفْتَرَضٍ طَاعَتُهُ- قَالَ وَ كَذَلِكَ لِكُلِّ مَنْ أَتَى قَبْرَ إِمَامٍ مُفْتَرَضٍ طَاعَتُهُ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ره عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِي الْقَاسِمِ عَنْ أَبِي عَلِيٍّ الْخُزَاعِيِّ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) وَ ذَكَرَ مِثْلَهُ
3. ‘Ali ibn Ḥusain narrated to me from Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā Al-‘Aťťār, from Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad, from Hārūn ibn Muslim, from Abī ‘Ali Al-Ḥarrāni, who said: I asked Abā ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)), “What is the reward for those who go to the Ziyārah of the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.)?” Imam (a.s.) replied, “Allāh will register the reward of performing a Hajj and an ‘Umrah for those who go to the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.), perform his Ziyārah, and establish two or four Rak’ah of prayer next to him.” I asked, “May I sacrifice myself for you! Is this (reward) the same for those who go to (the Ziyārah of) the grave of the (other) Imams whose obedience is obligatory?” Imam (a.s.) replied, “The reward is the same for anyone who goes to (the Ziyārah of) the grave of the (other) Imams whose obedience is obligatory.” The above Ḥadīth has also been narrated to me through the following chains: A) Muḥammad ibn Ḥusain ibn Mat Al-Jawhari, from Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad, from Hārūn ibn Muslim, from Abī ‘Ali Al-Ḥarrāni, from Abī ‘Abdillāh (a.s.). B) My father, from Sa’d ibn ‘Abdillāh, from Abil Qāsim, from Abī ‘Ali Al-Khuzā’i, from Abī ‘Abdillāh (a.s.).

4 حَدَّثَنِي الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ رَزِينٍ عَنْ شُعَيْبٍ الْعَقَرْقُوفِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ مَنْ أَتَى قَبْرَ الْحُسَيْنِ (ع) مَا لَهُ مِنَ الثَّوَابِ وَ الْأَجْرِ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ قَالَ يَا شُعَيْبُ مَا صَلَّى عِنْدَهُ أَحَدٌ الصَّلَاةَ إِلَّا قَبِلَهَا اللَّهُ مِنْهُ وَ لَا دَعَا عِنْدَهُ أَحَدٌ دَعْوَةً إِلَّا اسْتُجِيبَ لَهُ عَاجِلةً وَ آجِلَةً فَقُلْتُ جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ زِدْنِي فِيهِ قَالَ يَا شُعَيْبُ أَيْسَرُ مَا يُقَالُ لِزَائِرِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ (ع) قَدْ غُفِرَ لَكَ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ فَاسْتَأْنِفْ عَمَلًا جَدِيداً
4. Ḥasan ibn ‘Abdillāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ‘Isā narrated to me from his father, from Ḥasan ibn Maḥbūb, from ‘Alā ibn Razīn, from Shu’ayb Al-‘Aqraqūfi, who said: I asked Abā ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)), “May I sacrifice myself for you! What is the reward and the recompense for those who go to (the Ziyārah of) the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.)?” Imam (a.s.) replied, “O Shu’ayb! No one establishes prayers next to him without Allāh accepting it and no one prays for anything next to him without it being fulfilled (either) immediately or in the future.” I said, “May I sacrifice myself for you! Tell me more.” Imam (a.s.) replied: O Shu’ayb! The least (rewarding statement) with which a Zā`ir of Ḥusain ibn ‘Ali (a.s.) will be addressed is: O Slave of Allāh! Verily your (past) sins have been forgiven. Therefore, start again with new deeds.
