How to Establish Prayers Next to the Grave of Ĥusain (a.s.)

1 حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي (رحمه الله) وَ جَمَاعَةُ مَشَايِخِي عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْبَرْقِيِّ وَ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ الْحِمْيَرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْبَرْقِيِّ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ نَاجِيَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) قَالَ صَلِّ عِنْدَ رَأْسِ قَبْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ ع
1. My father and all of my scholars narrated to me from Sa’d ibn ‘Abdillāh, from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ‘Isā, from Muḥammad ibn Khālid Al-Barqi, from Ja’far ibn Nājiyah, who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) said: Prayers should be established next to the head of the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.). The above Ḥadīth has also been narrated to me through the following chain: Muḥammad ibn ‘Abdillāh, from his father ‘Abdillāh ibn Ja’far Al-Ḥimyari, from Abī ‘Abdillāh Al-Barqi, from Ja’far ibn Nājiyah, from Abī ‘Abdillāh (a.s.).

2 وَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي (رحمه الله) وَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ وَ جَمَاعَةُ مَشَايِخِي عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عُمَرَ وَ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ نُوحٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ عَنْ أَبِي الْيَسَعِ قَالَ سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) وَ أَنَا أَسْمَعُ قَالَ إِذَا أَتَيْتُ قَبْرَ الْحُسَيْنِ (ع) أَجْعَلُهُ قِبْلَةً إِذَا صَلَّيْتُ- قَالَ تَنَحَّ هَكَذَا نَاحِيَةً

My father, ‘Ali ibn Ḥusain and all of my scholars narrated to me from Sa’d ibn ‘Abdillāh, from Mūsā ibn ‘Umar, and from Ayyūb ibn Nūḥ, from ‘Abdillāh ibn Mughīrah, from Abil Yasa’, who said: I heard a man ask Abā ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)), “When I go to (the Ziyārah of) the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.), can I pray toward Qiblah facing the grave?” Imam (a.s.) replied, “Move to the side a little.”

3 حَدَّثَنِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ره عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجْرَانَ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَطِيَّةَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) قَالَ إِذَا فَرَغْتَ مِنَ التَّسْلِيمِ عَلَى الشُّهَدَاءِ أَتَيْتَ [فَأْتِ] قَبْرَ الْحُسَيْنِ ثُمَّ تَجْعَلُهُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ ثُمَّ تُصَلِّي مَا بَدَا لَكَ
3. ‘Ali ibn Ḥusain narrated to me from ‘Ali ibn Ibrāhīm, from his father, from Ibn Abī Najrān, from Yazīd ibn Isḥāq, from Ḥasan ibn ‘Aťiyyah, who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) said (as part of a longer Ḥadīth): After saying Salām to the martyrs, come (back) to the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.) and face the grave and establish as many prayers as possible.

4 وَ عَنْهُ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْحَلَبِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) قَالَ قُلْتُ إِنَّا نَزُورُ قَبْرَ الْحُسَيْنِ ع فَكَيْفَ نُصَلِّي عِنْدَهُ قَالَ تَقُومُ خَلْفَهُ عِنْدَ كَتِفَيْهِ ثُمَّ تُصَلِّي عَلَى النَّبِيِّ (ص) وَ تُصَلِّي عَلَى الْحُسَيْنِ ع
4. ‘Ali ibn Ḥusain narrated to me from ‘Ali ibn Ibrāhīm, from his father, from Ibn Faďďāl, from ‘Ali ibn ‘Uqbah, from ‘Ubaydillāh ibn ‘Ali Al-Ḥalabi, who said: I said to Abī ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)), “When we go to the Ziyārah of the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.), how should we establish prayers next to him?” Imam (a.s.) replied, “Stand behind the grave near his shoulders and then send blessing on the Prophet (s.a.a.w.) and send blessing on Ḥusain (a.s.).”

5 حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ نُوحٍ وَ غَيْرِهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الْيَسَعِ قَالَ سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) وَ أَنَا أَسْمَعُ عَنِ الْغُسْلِ إِذَا أَتَى قَبْرَ الْحُسَيْنِ (ع) قَالَ أَجْعَلُهُ قِبْلَةً إِذَا صَلَّيْتُ قَالَ تَنَحَّ هَكَذَا نَاحِيَةً قَالَ آخُذُ مِنْ طِينِ قَبْرِهِ وَ يَكُونُ عِنْدِي أَطْلُبُ بَرَكَتَهُ قَالَ نَعَمْ أَوْ قَالَ لَا بَأْسَ بِذَلِكَ

Muḥammad ibn Ja’far narrated to me from Muḥammad ibn Ḥusain, from Ayyūb ibn Nūḥ, and from others, from ‘Abdillāh ibn Mughīrah, from Abil Yasa’, who said: I heard a man ask Abā ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) about performing Ghusl before going to (the Ziyārah of) the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.). Then he asked, “Can I pray toward Qiblah facing the grave?” Imam (a.s.) replied, “Move to the side a little.” The man asked, “Can I take some of the clay of the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.) and keep it to seek blessings from it?” Imam (a.s.) replied, “Yes – or he said – there is nothing wrong with doing so.”

6 حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ حَمَّادٍ الْبَصْرِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْأَصَمِّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ سَالِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) أَنَّهُ أَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ لَهُ يَا ابْنَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ هَلْ يُزَارُ وَالِدُكَ قَالَ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ وَ يُصَلَّى عِنْدَهُ وَ قَالَ وَ يُصَلَّى خَلْفَهُ وَ لَا يُتَقَدَّمُ

Muḥammad ibn ‘Abdillāh ibn Ja’far narrated to me from his father, from ‘Ali ibn Muḥammad ibn Sālim, from Muḥammad ibn Khālid, from ‘Abdillāh ibn Ḥammād Al-Basri, from ‘Abdillāh ibn ‘Abdil Raḥmān Al-Asam, from Hishām ibn Sālim, who said: A man came to Abī ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) and asked, “O son of the Messenger of Allāh! Should one go to the Ziyārah of your father (Ḥusain (a.s.))?” Imam (a.s.) replied, “Yes and establish prayers next to his grave. But one should not establish prayers in front of the grave, but rather, should stand behind it when establishing prayers.”
